SIX MATCH REPORTS MUSSELLBURGH MINI RUGBY
TOURNAMENT Ellon had long been looking forward to last fixture of the season as the North-east team has had a good relationship with this southern club for some time and always enjoyed both the hospitality and the level of competition this tournament has provided. This occasion was to prove no different with Ellon placed in the hardest draw against some very stiff opposition which was taken as a compliment. Once again Ellon was joined by its travelling band of supporters who as ever were noticed by all for their vocal support of the teams. As ever I would like to extend the thanks of both players and coaches for their continued help in away games. Ellon 2 Portobello 0 Ellon exploded onto the field and took charge of this game right from the start. Andrew Fraser, Sylvester Cadger and Sam Mountain constantly carried the ball deep into the opposition’s half before feeding it out and Craig Catto, Rory Yuill and Grant Fox all made move after move towards the try line. But spirited defence from Portobello kept Ellon from scoring despite intense pressure from Joe Senior and David Liddell on the wings. But the pressure paid off eventually and with the whole team in full support Fox put one over the line to put Ellon one up at half time. The second half saw more of the same and superb tackling from every member of the Ellon team meant that Portobello was never allowed to progress. The domination of the Ellon team was rewarded when Yuill broke through to score Ellon’s second try. Ellon 0 North Berwick 1 This game was classified by supporters from several of the clubs attending as The game of the tournment and is will surely be remembered as one of the best games Ellon never won. Spectators from both clubs were treated to an outstanding game of rugby from their teams. Without exception, every single member of the Ellon team turned in superb performances which they can be individually proud of . Everything they learned this season came together for this final performance with tackling in particular being top class. Ellon made one slip at the beginning of the second half which gave North Berwick the chance to break through and score. Ellon retaliated and piled on the pressure and the southern team were never given another chance. It seemed Ellon’s sheer guts, determination and skill had paid off in the closing moments of the game when intense pressure resulted in a try for Ellon. The referee however took a different view and disallowed it, judging that the ball had been over the dead ball line, contrary to what nearby spectators had seen North Berwick came away as winners in what was a magnificent contest. Team: Sylvester Cadger, Craig Catto, Grant Fox, Andrew Fraser, Christopher Howie, David Liddell, Sam Mountain (Capt), Joe Senior, Darren Stephen, Rory Yuill. WHITECRAIGS, GLASGOW, FRIENDLY – September 9, 2001
Ellon’s
youngest rugby team returned triumphant from their first fixture of the
new season in Glasgow on Sunday. The
Primary Four squad notched up three consecutive wins against their
Central Belt opponents, while the three other teams in the Ellon mini
rugby section returned with mixed results. A
good crowd of parents and supporters followed the squad coach to
Whitecraigs RFC in the first of a season of journeys down south to take
on the best in Scottish rugby. Mini
section convener Jim Millar said the youngsters were determined to
emulate the senior players in constantly improving their skills and the
reputation of ERFC. “To
do this, we have no choice but to play 95 Per cent of the season in the
southern half of the country,” added Mr Millar. “We can only thank the growing number of supporters who are
willing to undertake these journeys to support the young players.” Primary Six Ellon
1 Whitecraigs 3 The
P6 team set off enthusiastically for Glasgow for the first matches of
the new season. However they were unable to capitalise on that
enthusiasm as much as they would have liked in the opening game.
They showed some sparks of promise, but overall the team put in a
sleepy performance in the first half which allowed the home team to take
control and stamp their authority on the game with two tries. The
second half showed improvement from the Ellon boys and their potential
began to show through. Whitecraigs’ third try spurred them into action
and they began to pick up the pace. A try from Grant Fox provided more
motivation, but the team had left themselves with too much to do in the
second half and were unable to even the score. Ellon
2 Helensburgh 2 With
a bit more alertness and zest, Ellon manged to recover some of last
season’s form when they took to the field for the second game of the
day. The form which made
the team a success last season began to emerge in the second game.
Determined play saw Ellon take the advantage in several of the scrums
with the pack of Sam Mountain, Andrew Fraser and Joe Senior winning the
ball from their opponents and feeding it back to their team mates. Fox
made several runs down the centre with the wings, Kristopher Dey and
Rory Yuill both making attempts to break through the Helensburgh line.
In the end though it was Senior who succeeded in putting the ball
over the line to give Ellon both its tries after some fine team play
involving John McLean and Sylvester Cadger.

Barbarians 1 The
promised potential of the preceding match was delivered in this final
game. Ellon finally woke up and produced some
impressive forward play and strong tackling enabling them to win
easily. Craig Catto found
form with his recently acquired kicking skills which meant the team
constantly took the game into their opponents half.
Effective tackling from Fox and Thomas Westerman kept the young
“Barbarians” from breaking through and Ellon ended the first half in
the lead when Mountain found the line seconds before the whistle. The
second half of the game though belonged to Fraser. Consistently in the thick of things throughout the day’s
matches his hard work was rewarded when he found the try line a
hairsbreadth ahead of his Whitecraigs pursuer minutes into the second
half. He then raised a huge cheer from the sideline supporters when
he ran in his second try moments later then set the seal on success by
landing his hat trick just before the final whistle.
Coach Derek Fraser said the form and potential shown at
Whitecraigs augured well for the reast of season.
“However the Ellon boys have a lot of hard work ahead of them
and a more alert, and sharp, team effort is required in order to build
on the success of last year,” he added. Team:
Sylvester Cadger, Craig Catto, Kristopher Dey, Grant Fox, Andrew Fraser,
John McLean, Sam Mountain, Joe Senior, Thomas Westerman, Rory Yuill. THE MEADOWS, ELLON, FRIENDLY – September 16, 2001
Two
of Ellon’s mini rugby teams managed a clean sweep against of victories
over two of their toughest rivals on Sunday. The
four mini rugby teams were playing at their home ground, The Meadows,
against the highly-rated Aberdeen Grammar and Stirling County in their
second fixture of the season. Spectators
witnessed some of the best games seen at Ellon at this level outside of
the annual tournament, said ERFC mini section convener Jim Millar.
Ellon was able to thrill many of their supporters without whom
the atmosphere would not have been as tense and dramatic.
Primary
Six
Ellon 8 Aberdeen Grammar 0Magnificent forward play was the foundation for this
well earned victory over Aberdeen Grammar. Relentless rucking and
mauling by the P6 pack had Grammmar continuously under pressure
throughout the game. The first half saw tries from Rory Yuill (2), Joe
Senior (2) and Craig Catto. Grammar
regained their compusure in the second half however Ellon ran in only a
further three ties with Andrew Fraser, Grant Fox and Catto the scorers.
Ellon's tackling was unforgiving with Thomas Westerman particularly
notable. Ellon had to step up a gear to match the well
organised and skilful Stirling side.
Ellon went behind early in the first half only to respond with
two tries by Fox and Yuill before the half time break. Ellon were
steadily applying the pressure to Stirling, but a momentary lapse of
concentration allowed Stirling to level the game early in the second
half. Ellon stuck to the task and were rewarded with a fine try in the
corner scored by Catto. The
Ellon P6's showed tremendous team, having pinned Stirling back for much
of the second half. A shortened game against Stirling was the last match
for Ellon who were aware that Stirling would want to to make amends for
their early loss. Ellon however were in an unforgiving mood and the
forwards again dominated play with Cadger, Fraser and Mountain
continuously winning the ball, allowing the ever busy scrum half Senior
to take advantage of the space opened up. The back division of Fox,
Catto, Yuill, Westerman and Dey showed their talents by running two
tries without reply. Coaches
Ian Cochrane and Derek Fraser were pleased with the disciplined
yet stylish way the team had played. Mr Cochrane said the team was
knitting together well and showed promise. Team:
Sylvester Cadger, Craig Catto, Kristopher Dey, Grant Fox, Andrew Fraser,
Sam Mountain, Joe Senior, Thomas Westerman, Rory Yuill. CURRIE, EDINBURGH, FRIENDLY – September 23, 2001Ellon’s
mini rugby players travelled to the heartland of Scottish rugby on
Sunday to given a lesson in the game to some of the country’s best
teams. The squad
returned from the Stewart’s Melville grounds in Edinburgh with enough
wins to prove that they were in the premier league for their age group. After the
series of friendly matches against the cream of the Central Belt, ERFC
mini section convener Jim Millar said, “Once again a little town in
the North-east has proved that we can take on the best that Scotland has
to offer.” He added: “As always we owe a debt of
gratitude to the away supporters who make a vital difference to the
game. Their cheering
stiffens the players’ resolve and shows the coaches that they are not
alone.” Ellon
7 Watsonians 0 The
P6 team took on one of the bastions of Scottish rugby when they
met George Watson’s College – and claimed a decisive victory.
They faced little real competition from the team, which produced
the likes of Gavin and Scott Hastings, and
stamped their mark early on the
game with a quick try from Grant Fox. The Watsonians tried to
gain some headway, but determined tackling from Sam Barrett and
Sylvester Cadger kept them confined. Sam
Mountain and Andrew
Fraser stopped any opposition advance in midfield and gave Fox the
opportunity to run in two more tries before the half time whistle.
A try early in the second half from Rory Yuill showed Ellon were
determined to keep up the pressure and this was followed by a try from
Joe Senior which began with a run from within their own half.
Craig Catto made several runs for the try line, but it was Sam
Barrett who gave Ellon try number six.
Decisive midfield play from Mountain and Cadger kept Ellon in
control and a final try from Yuill gave Ellon their seventh try of the
game. Ellon
5 Stewart’s
Melville 1 Ellon
faced tougher opposition in their second game and allowed the Edinburgh
team to run in an early first try. They immediately rallied to the
challenge and turned in a performance which one regular spectator
described as their best game of the season.
Fraser took Ellon well into their opponent’s half with a series
of powerful drives.
The Ellon team chased the ball like terriers until their hard
work was rewarded when Catto broke
free and scored a well deserved equalising try. Ellon
put on an impressive display in the remainder of the first half.
Thomas Westerman was constantly in the thick of the action and
worked hard to prevent Melville from progressing into the Ellon half.
There was impressive play from the forward team of Mountain, Fraser and
Cadger who repeatedly won possession of the ball and fed out to the
backs, work which was rewarded when Fox ran in another fine try.
The second half began with the forwards again stealing the ball
time and again and passing
it out which gave Yuill the chance to break away and cross the
line for Ellon’s third try. When
Edinburgh did get the ball, it was only to find themselves stopped short
by superb tackling from Fox and Senior with those who did manage to
break through meeting a second tier of committed tacklers in the shape
of Catto, Barrett and Yuill. Ellon
never let up and followed this with a superb display of team work which
involved the skills of every boy on the field before Fox scored
Ellon’s fourth and fifth tries. Coach
Derek Fraser was delighted with his team’s performance. “This
was excellent,” he said. “The boys put in an excellent display on
the field. A lot of hard work goes into bringing
the team here and this really paid off.” Team:
Sam Barrett, Sylvester Cadger, Craig Catto, Grant Fox, Andrew Fraser,
Sam Mountain, Joe Senior, Thomas Westerman, Rory Yuill. ABERDEEN GRAMMAR TOURNAMENT – September 30, 2001
ELLON'S
mini rugby squad are celebrating their first trophies of the season
after lifting two winners' shields at a major tournament in Aberdeen at
the weekend. The
primary five and six teams swept the field at Aberdeen Grammar's
Rubislaw grounds to take their first silverware of the season, while the
primary four and seven squads came runners up in their groups. The
victories marked one of the most successful weekends in the history of
the ERFC mini section, with every player taking home a medal. Stunned
Aberdeen Grammar hosts were left dumbfounded as half of their gleaming
trophies were loaded on to the Ellon coach to make their way to their
new home for at least the next year.
Mini
section convener Jim Millar said the wins cemented Ellon's reputation as
the leading force in rugby across the North-east of Scotland and as one
of the country's top mini rugby sections. "Hopefully
this will be the first of many such triumphs," said Mr Millar.
"The big task now is making sure the boys keep a level head
and maintain the superb standard of rugby we saw on Sunday. "As
usual, the travelling support made the day.
Our supporters were given a feast of sporting skills in return
for letting our boys know their efforts were being cheered on from the
sidelines." Ellon
4 Madras 1 Ellon
opened on fine form against one of the tournament favourites.
The Fife side came up against stiff opposition from the forwards
and the backs and had to fight hard for their only try off the game.
Good support play from the forwards combined with driving runs
from the backs saw Andrew Fraser cross the line.
This was followed up with another score from Sam Mountain while
Craig Catto managed to put the ball over the line twice before the final
whistle. Ellon
3 Perthshire 0 Ellon’s
second game was against a Perthshire team which was much improved from
the last time the two teams met on the field. Despite the score line,
Ellon had a hard game on their hands, but strong drives by Fraser,
Sylvester Cadger and Rory Yuill coupled with runs from Grant Fox,
Alastair Gossip and Catto kept the ball in the opponents’ half.
Ceaseless work by Mountain and Joe Senior in midfield saw them
constantly regain the ball from Perthshire hands.
Teamwork in this, as every game, was the key to success with the
tries landed by Fox, Cadger and Catto. Ellon
5 Huntly 0 Ellon
were determined to give no quarter when they met Huntly and the
spectators who braved the torrential downpour were rewarded by another
excellent display. Senior
and Ben Sim were tireless in their pursuit of the ball, keeping it in
Ellon’s control. Lewis Tritton was unlucky not to score following an excellent
run. Nevertheless Ellon
stamped their authority on the scoreboard with tries from Catto,
Mountain, Gossip (2) and Fox. Tackling
was key to the Ellon game with Fox and Mountain both on good form.
Tackles by Yuill were less popular however -- he’d been drafted
in to play for the Huntly team who were a man short. Ellon
4 Aberdeen Grammar 0
(Semi final) Ellon
came face to face with the home team in their semi final match and were
unforgiving. Grammar were
stopped at every turn with excellent tackling from Fox, Tritton, and
Mountain. Grammar broke
through once and looked certain to score, but Yuill produced an
outstanding tackle when he pursued the runaway from halfway and brought
him decisively down just short of the try line.
In contrast, Fraser’s trademark drives enhanced by drives from
Sim, Cadger and Yuill won valuable distance for Ellon while breakaway
runs from Gossip, Catto and Fox took the ball further and further
towards the score line -- moves which paid off with tries from Fox (2),
Fraser and Catto. Ellon
3 Perthshire 0
(Final) Ellon
met up with Perthshire again for the final. Despite their earlier
victory they were determined not to be complacent.
By this stage, the constant rain meant that the final was played
on a sea of mud which made the quality of play even more impressive.
The boys were virtually unidentifiable from one another for two
reasons: the cohesion of the team which saw every boy on the field
playing a full part in the success and the coating of mud which obscured
their features. Catto put
the first try over the line, an excellent run by Fox gave them their
second while another try from Fox just on the final whistle made it
three. The
win completed the team's hat trick, winning the Grammar trophy for the
third year in a row. The
same team took the P5 trophy last year and the P4 award in 1999.
It was an achievement which head coach Derek Fraser said was well
deserved. “The team have
shown that they can be consistently good and today we saw some excellent
play from the boys in what were, at times, appalling conditions. Their
latest success is all the more notable because they conceded only one
try in their five games." Team:
Sylvester Cadger, Craig Catto, Grant Fox, Andrew Fraser, Alastair
Gossip, Sam Mountain, Joe Senior, Ben Sim, Lewis Tritton, Rory Yuill. GLASGOW ACADEMICALS TOURNAMENT – October 7, 2001
Ellon’s
youngest rugby team brought home silver medals at the weekend after
taking on some of the best teams in Scotland at a major tournament in
Glasgow on Sunday. Television
presenter and comedian Fred Macauley presented the medals to Ellon’s
primary four team after they made it to the final of the Glasgow
Academicals tournament. Ellon’s
P5 were knocked out in the semi-finals after playing through their pool
group one man down, while the primary six and seven teams performed with
distinction. ERFC
mini section convener Jim Millar said the teams had again showed they
were competing in the top league of Scottish mini rugby. “Ellon
is now a major force in Scottish rugby thanks to the efforts of these
kids who turn out to play week after week and the parents and supporters
who cheer them on,” said Mr Millar. Ellon
6 Dumfries 1 Dumfries
got off to a good start in this game, but a determined Ellon squad came
straight back and took charge of the match. A fine tackle from Craig
Catto put the ball in Grant Fox’s hands for the first try of the
tourney; a feat which was followed soon after with a second try from
Fox. Catto was then rewarded for his earlier hard work when he landed
Ellon’s third try. Dumfries
took advantage of an opportunity to put themselves on the scoreboard,
but an excellent tackle from Sylvester Cadger kept them from getting two
in a row. Strong drives
from Rory Yuill, Sam Mountain, Kristopher Dey and Cadger took the ball
deep into Dumfries territory. John
McLean and Joe Senior were constantly in the thick of the action,
regaining the ball from their opponents at every opportunity - work
which paid off with a well deserved try for Senior.
An excellent run from Catto followed by some fine team passing
gave Dey the opportunity to score Ellon’s fifth try with Mountain
finally sealing Dumfries’s fate when he made it number six for Ellon. Ellon
0 North Berwick 0 Ellon
faced a much tougher team when they met the Borders town and the quality
of rugby stepped up a pace. There
were some excellent demonstrations of team work from the Ellon squad and
spectators saw an exciting, skilled game of rugby.
Catto, McLean and Cadger all produced vital tackles which
prevented Berwick from progressing too far into Ellon territory.
Senior, Mountain and Fox were tireless in midfield repeatedly
winning the ball from their opponents and passing it out to Yuill and
Dey who repeatedly drove forward into the opponents’ half.
But it was a game in which neither team could gain the edge to
score and they had to settle for a draw -- a score which may have been a
fair result, but which failed to reflect the calibre of the game. Ellon
1 Whitecraigs 5 Based
on their previous performance, Ellon went into their third game
determined to make their mark, but they couldn’t quite regain the form
they had shown against North Berwick.
The Glasgow team
scored an early first try which was swiftly followed by another.
Both trys were disputed by the Ellon coach, but were allowed to
stand and although Ellon lost heart slightly they were determined not to
give up. A try from Fox
raised team spirits, but Whitecraigs were quick to respond and landed
their third try almost immediately afterwards.
The second half brought no better news for Ellon and Whitecraigs
landed two more tries before the final whistle.
Coach Mick Leng said that the team had not let themselves down
with their performances. “There
was nothing negative about their performance; on the whole, they played
very well and I was pleased with their performance and they should be
too,” he said. Team:
Sylvester Cadger, Craig Catto, Kristopher Dey, Grant Fox, John
McLean, Sam Mountain, Joe Senior, Lewis Tritton, Rory Yuill. MUSSELBURGH After
a three-week rest, Ellon RFC Mini section once again headed south in
search of competition, this time to Musselburgh a club that we forged
links with last season. This
particular friendly was always going to be tough with teams such as
Stewart Melville, Selkirk and Musselburgh all looking to show Ellon how
rugby is played south of the Highland line. But as always, Ellon enjoys
a challenge - an attitude that has often in the recent past brought
victory out of defeat. Yet again we must thank our long suffering supporters who continue to find themselves having to make that long drive south to watch us. Believe me it does make a difference to see friendly faces on the touchline shouting support. Ellon 3 Selkirk 2 Ellon Primary 6’s traveled to Musselburgh with high hopes after their excellent display at the Grammar Tournament, where, for the second year running, they departed the tournament with the silverware. Whether it was the long journey or the long lay off between games only the boys will know as a lackluster performance ensued. Ellon started the game confidently and ran in two early tries both scored by Grant Fox, both tries coming from excellent forward play from Andrew Fraser, Sam Mountain and Thomas Westerman. This was to prove a false dawn as Ellon took the foot off the gas to allow in 2 very soft tries from Selkirk, despite some heroic tackling from Kristopher Dey to level the game at 2 – 2. The second half went from bad to worse as Ellon struggled to find their usual form and were lucky not to concede a third try after some fine play from Selkirk. Ellon responded with Joe Senior plucking a loose ball from the back of a ruck, before sending Craig Catto on a fine run, culminating in a fine third try to tie up Fox’s hat trick for the game. Selkirk had the bit between the teeth and sensed a draw might be on the cards, thankfully for Ellon, Rory Yuill was having none of it and proceeded to put in a series of excellent tackles to deny the Borders side a share of the spoils. The team’s Backs coach Ian Cochrane, struggled to find words to describe the poor performance from Ellon lamenting that: “The boys had beaten the same side last year comfortably, after we scored the second try the boys became cocky and nearly paid the price”. Ellon 5 Musselburgh 5 After a stern talking to from both coaches, Ellon started the game with renewed vigor, but Ellon’s forwards were simply outclassed by a very determined Musselburgh pack who had up to this game, only been beaten once by Ellon in their previous encounters. Ellon’s backs had their work cut out to contain the onslaught as Musselburgh swept aside Ellon’s poor tackling. Again Dey and Yuill excelled and stopped the opposition time and time again. Musselburgh dominated the first half and turned to face Ellon 5-O up and must have thought a rout was on the cards. Thankfully, Ellon regained their composure and after some fine driving play from Fraser, well supported by Westerman, it was left to Ellon’s captain Mountain to crash over for Ellon’s opener. Ellon were by now starting to look like their old selves again and Ellon were further rewarded with a second try after a fine solo run from Yuill. Musselburgh pressed for a sixth try but some desperate tackling from Dey and Fox stopped the Edinburgh side dead. With some smart thinking Senior, realising that Musselburgh were on the rack, took a quick penalty and passed the ball to Craig Catto who broke through several despairing tackles to score Ellon’s third try. Yuill, was by now a man possessed and made some fine runs, assisted by both Fox and Catto who combined well in the middle of the park. His efforts were rewarded after some ferocious forward play from Mountain, Westerman and Fraser, with his second try of the game. Could Ellon pull back to square the game? An injury to one of the Musselburgh Players, allowed captain Mountain the opportunity to gee-up his troops and after some fine play from Fox and Catto, Yuill was handed a difficult pass from Dey and after linking with Senior crashed over in the corner to secure a draw for the visitors. Ellon coach Derek Fraser exclaimed after the game: “I don’t understand why the boys have to be several scores down, before they play as a team. It’s happening too often, we need to cut out the shoddy play at the start of games.” Ellon 1 Musselburgh Barbarians 3 With Stewart’s Melville unable to turn out a Primary 6 side, Ellon and Musselburgh, decided to play a last game to allow Ellon some much needed match practice. One Musselburgh on-looker said that “Ellon had traveled a long way and that after such an arduous and well played game, it was a crucial that the boys were given another opportunity to play.” This short game was 5 minutes each half. Just as well and, despite some heroic tackling from Yuill and Dey, the score could have been much worse. Ellon started off well with some good driving play from Fraser and Mountain, however three missed tackles in the centre of the park allowed the Musselburgh backs to run in unchallenged. Half time ensued and Ellon turned round to face the elements. The second period was evenly matched however the Musselburgh team had put on some of their lesser-experienced players. Ellon did not take advantage with this half now evenly matched until Yuill got the bit between his teeth with a rampaging run scored the try of the game right on full time. Team: Craig Catto, Kristopher Dey, Grant Fox, Andrew Fraser, Sam Mountain, Joe Senior, Thomas Westerman, Rory Yuill.
HOWE OF FIFE TOURNAMENT
After
an unexpected break from competitive rugby, Ellon RFC Mini Section found
itself once again south bound. This time the trip to Cupar in Fife was a
relatively short one for the section; some would say it’s almost next
door compared to the usual runs we make.
But
the trip proved worthwhile, with the Primary 5 team taking the Runner Up
placing in their category and the other teams putting up a fine show
against some strong teams from central Scotland.
“The
Primary 5 team well deserved their placing and the other teams all put
in some commendable performances,” said Convener Jim Millar.
“As
always, our faithful supporters were right behind us, literally in this
case, in a convoy of cars which followed the bus down to give us the
much-needed moral support that we have come to rely on. Again, a big
thank you to you all who support us as it is much appreciated.”
Ellon
0 Stewart’s Melville 2
Fifteen
minutes after getting off the bus from Ellon the Primary 6 team were on
the field facing one of the toughest teams of the tournament. They knew
this would be no easy game and they were right, and despite a 2-0
defeat, they put on a fine show of rugby with teamwork really coming to
the fore.
Two
breakaway tries in the first half put the Edinburgh team in the lead.
The second half saw an Ellon side determined to make up for lost time.
Good tackling backed up by excellent support kept the Edinburgh boys at
Bay and Ellon was unlucky not to even the score.
The
final score doesn’t reflect the skill and determination show by the
Ellon P6s and had they not been bus rusty, the score line could have
been completely different. Ellon 5 Perthshire 0
The Ellon players found their form during the second game and gave the spectators a display of excellent rugby. Captain Sam Mountain put the team on the right track when he ran in Ellon’s first two tries of the tournament.
Ellon
kept up the pressure on their Perthshire opponents with strong play from
the forwards and the hours of practise paid off with some textbook
displays of back moves including loops and missed man passes. Three more
well deserved tries came Ellon’s way with Grant Fox, Sylvester Cadger
and Andrew Fraser all adding to the final score. Ellon 9 Madras 0
This game was a joy to watch for the Ellon spectators who had made the trip south. Ellon were unstoppable and achieved the final score by a tight, disciplined game in which they made few mistakes. A collective drive soon put Ellon up at their opponent’s half and Cadger was the first to put the ball over the line. Strong play by the forwards kept Ellon in control and Rory Yuill put Ellon further ahead when two strong runs up the wing resulted in Ellon’s next two tries. This was swiftly followed by Ellon’s fourth try, which came from an excellent run up the field by Joe Senior. A strong drive forward by Fraser followed by some disciplined passing play between Mountain and Yuill gave Yuill the chance to run in his third try to put Ellon 5-0 up at half time. Ellon continued on form in the second half and Fraser soon upped the score when he broke free and crossed the line for Ellon. Craig Catto and Grant Fox kept control in midfield giving Fox the change to run in another fine try.
Kristopher
Dey, who was playing an excellent game was then rewarded for his hard
work when Fox took the ball up the field and passed it to a well placed
Dey who carried it over the line for Ellon’s 8th try of the
game. Rory Yuill ran in another try to give Ellon their final 9-0
victory. Ellon 4 Dunfermline 3
Ellon came onto the field and made a lazy start to the game that their Dunfermline opponents were quick to capitalise on when they ran in an early first try.
Dey
redressed the balance however when he picked up the ball two thirds of
the way up the field and ran in a decisive try.
The
game seesawed one way then another until Yuill powered his way through
the opposition to land a try in the corner.
The
two teams settled into what was an evenly matched game, with the Ellon
forward trio of Cadger, Fraser and Mountain working tirelessly to regain
control of the ball from their opponents. Catto and Senior made the most
of every opportunity and a pass to Fox gave him the chance to break
through and secure Ellon’s third try.
Ellon
came under heavy pressure as the game reached its final stages and Kyle
Adalsteinsson brought in as a sub for an injured Dey quickly earned his
place on the team with some committed tackling and defence. The winning
try however came from Grant Fox, who grabbed the ball from a maul right
on the Ellon try line and turned on a burst of speed which made him
unstoppable as he ran the length of the field to score his second try of
the game. Ellon 0 Howe of Fife 8
The
drive and determination that had taken Ellon through four hard games
took their toll however, and they took to the field for what promised to
be an extremely tough game tired, and with an unprecedented string of
injuries to contend with.
The
courage and determination were there but the team was flagging and were
no match for a disciplined and very much on form home team.
By
half time, Ellon were 5-0 down and the second half brought little
improvement with Howe running in three more tries before the final
whistle without any real threat.
Had
Ellon been able to maintain the form they had shown in earlier games,
the score line might have done more to reflect their overall performance
on the day; as it was, they put up a brave performance but were beaten
by the better team on the day. ELLON MINI RUGBY CLUB TOURNAMENT MEADOWS SPORTS CENTRE SUNDAY, MARCH 10 HUNDREDS of young rugby players - and their coaches and supporters - braved Sunday’s sleet and chilly temperatures to take part in the Ellon Mini Rugby Club Tournament at the Meadows Sports Centre. Teams from all over Scotland travelled to the event to compete in the tournament which proved a triumph for Ellon’s Primary 5 team who lifted the winner’s trophy after an outstanding final against Forresters from Edinburgh in a game which came right down to the wire in a sudden death playoff. The Ellon Primary 4 team picked up the Mary Christiansen Trophy for best runner-up home team. “Although the poor weather prevented two clubs from making the trip to Ellon, the actual competition and standard of play was the best I have seen with the best of Scotland’s clubs battling it out for trophies,” said Club Convener Jim Millar.“I would like to give a personal thanks to all the spectators who braved the weather; without them cheering the teams on the event would have been the poorer. In addition I must thank all those who helped organise the tournament, for without their help ERFC could never host this major event.” Ellon 1 Stewart Melville 6 Playing in their first game since November, it was a very rusty Primary Six team which took to the field against Stewart Melville. The Edinburgh team is a force to be reckoned with at the best of times and Ellon failed to find their form in this opening match. Melville ran in an easy, early
first try which was soon followed by a second as Ellon failed to make
their tackles count. They came back briefly when Rory Yuill took
possession of the ball and broke through to score for Ellon. The
Edinburgh side came back quickly though and ran in another two tries
before the half time whistle. The Ellon team began to pick up in the
second half, but still had trouble with tackles and allowed the
Edinburgh team to run in two more, almost unopposed tries. Ellon 1 Forresters 3 Ellon came up against Forresters, another Edinburgh team in their second match and although the visitors ran in the first try, Ellon were showing signs of improvement. There were a series of excellent drives from Craig Catto, Sam Mountain and Sylvester Cadger strongly supported by Andrew Fraser and Joe Senior while Grant Fox and the wings Kristopher Dey and Rory Yuill all put in important tackles. Ellon pulled even when Yuill dodged past several opponents to score. Ellon’s game continued to
improve, however injuries to two players unsettled a team which had
begun to settle down and they lost their impetus. Newcomers Guy Garrick
and Darren Steven included in the squad for the first time,
were brought into the game and showed great potential, and Ellon
worked hard to maintain control, but Forresters just had the edge and
pulled ahead with two more tries. Ellon 6 West of Scotland 1 Ellon finally seemed to find their form in their third game and settled down to play a far better game. They let the Glasgow based team through to score the first try but it was to the only one they would allow during the game. A quick try from Yuill gave Ellon the equaliser and a much improved Ellon team got the bit between their teeth and started playing as a team should. A smooth try from Fox put Ellon ahead and this was followed by strong runs from Catto, Mountain, and Senior who all threatened to score; determined drives from Fraser and Cadger took the ball deep into their opponents half giving Fraser the chance to break free and put Ellon 3-1 up at halftime. A determined run by Senior which
resulted in a cleverly timed pass gave Garrick the chance to put Ellon
further ahead. Controlled well thought out passing from Ellon moved the
ball up the field to Yuill hands who ran it over the line for Ellon’s
fifth try. Ellon’s victory was assured when a good run by Garrick and
a late pass to Mountain, who put it down over the line, gave Ellon their
sixth try. Ellon 1 Musselburgh 0 With both teams having missed out in a place in the final and the extreme cold taking its toll on players, the coaches agreed to a short final game. Ellon took control early on with the forwards winning the ball time and again and feeding it out to the backs who brought passing skills into play to move the ball across the field. Good passing work between Catto and Dey put the ball back into Catto’s hands who capitalised by running it over the line to put Ellon ahead. Musselburgh tried hard to equalise but a determined Ellon met them at every turn and the game concluded with Ellon remaining one up. Team: Sylvester Cadger, Craig
Catto, Kristopher Dey, Grant Fox, Andrew Fraser, Guy Garrick, Sam
Mountain (Capt), Joe Senior, Darren Steven, Rory Yuill.
Ellon Mini Rugby Club’s Primary 4 to 7 teams travelled to Edinburgh at the weekend to take part in the Forresters tournament. Balmy, sunny weather made it a good day our for players and spectators alike. Ellon’s Primary 4 and 5 teams just missed out on the medals by taking third place in their respective categories. Ellon 6 Livingston 0 When Ellon took to the field against a much physically larger Livingston side it looked like they would have a hard battle on their hands, but minutes into the game, it because clear that size didn’t matter. Ellon, fielding two new players - David Liddell and Lee Adams - took control from the start and kept it. Grant Fox ran the first two tries early on in the game from long solo runs which went uncontested. Rory Yuill gave Ellon their third try, again from a long solo run, a feat which was matched soon after by Craig Catto. Livingston showed improvement in
the second half but any breaks were soon halted by impressive tackling
from Sylvester Cadger and Joe Senior in midfield supported by Lee Adams.
Wings Kristopher Dey and David Liddell were constant threats to the
opposition with both making serious runs for the line. Some clever
footwork from Yuill saw him weave past several opponents to land a fifth
try for Ellon with Fox setting the seal on Ellon’s victory when he ran
in his team’s sixth try. Ellon 0 Linlithgow. The cohesion and determination which Ellon had shown in the first game deserted them in their second game of the tournament. Linlithgow is a challenging opponent at the best of times and Ellon failed to find their form in the second half and made some careless, costly mistakes. Linlithgow ran in a very early first try while Ellon struggled to contain them. They began to pick up pace and made the southern team work harder, Senior seemed to be everywhere at once while determined tackling from Yuill, Fox, Cadger and Catto kept Linlithgow from the score line but a break in the Ellon defence gave a Linlithgow player the chance to break through and dive for the try line. The second half saw big
improvements in the Ellon performance with the wings, Dey and Liddell
both making determined attempts to break through but Ellon couldn’t
claw back the lead and it was Livingston who went on to score again
before the final whistle. Ellon 1 Currie 3 Ellon’s third game was a keenly contested match which brought out some excellent play from the Ellon boys. Senior and Yuill were tireless in their efforts to win the ball, with constant support from Cadger, Catto and Fox and back up from Adams. Team work produced some fine displays of passing with the ball going from wing right across the field to wing but they were unable to keep Currie out and the Edinburgh team scored three teams. The score line didn’t really reflect the commitment and determination which Ellon showed and at the start of the second half, Ellon’s form still made the match winnable. But Currie managed to contain what was a continuous determined effort from Ellon whose hard work was rewarded to some extent when the team took control and brought the ball right down the field to the Currie line where Fox took it over the line to score. “I was very pleased with the team’s performance,” said coach Derek Fraser. “They went down there with eight players and no substitutes which can put a lot of pressure on them as they know there is no respite. There were some excellent performances and as a team they impressed me with the way they played. They didn’t win but they played well and they never gave up; I had no complaints and was proud of their determination.” Primary 6 team: Lee Adams,
Sylvester Cadger, Craig Catto (Capt), Kristopher Dey, Grant Fox, David
Liddell, Joe Senior, Rory Yuill. Stirling County Mini Rugby Club Tournament 21/04/02With the success of the 1ST XV
in the BT Cellnet Bowl the Mini Section had high hopes for last
Sunday’s Stirling Mini Rugby Club Tournament. This event is always a
highlight of our season with only the best teams in Scotland competing
for the trophies. The Ellon teams supporters also had high hopes with
the largest contingent this season heading south to cheer on the
players, and again I must thank theses diehards for making the trip
south. Ellon 0 London Scottish 2 Ellon’s Primary 6 fell into their usual trap of spending half of their first game getting into first gear and they played the penalty when their opponents scored the first try. Ellon picked up the pace after that, and some excellent tackling contained the London team and Ellon worked hard to take the ball forward into their opponents half with breaks down both sides from Joe Senior and Craig Catto. However the southern team pulled further ahead when the referee awarded a try which both the Ellon and London Scottish coaches saying should never have been given. The game was never really allowed to flow after that with persistent infringements from both sides at scrums and at rucks. But tenacious tackling from Rory Yuill, David Liddell, Grant Fox and Sam Mountain kept the score at two and the final score didn’t really reflect the quality of their play and their domination of the game as it continued. Ellon 2 Perthshire 0 The second game saw some excellent play by Ellon who really took the game to Perthshire. A fine display of passing put the ball into Yuill’s hands and he took it over the line for Ellon’s first try. Ellon kept up the pressure with strong drives from Sylvester Cadger, Andrew Fraser and Mountain taking the ball into their opponents half. Wings Kristopher Dey and Senior both threatened the Perthshire defence on the wings while Catto was a constant threat in midfield. Yuill and Fox persistently pushed deep into the Perthshire defence and Ellon’s second try came after a breakaway run from Fox, who took the ball up the field and passed it to Cadger to carry over the try line. Ellon 0 Stirling County 4 Ellon had their work cut out for them in the third encounter and put on a good performance with some excellent tackling across the board in a game which gave newcomer Lee Adams the chance to come onto the field to play against one of the top teams in Scotland. Time and again it looked as though the hard work might result in a try but Stirling was also on the ball when it came to making their tackles count. But in the end, it was Stirling which found the breaks and made the most of them proving that on this particular day, they had the edge over the Ellon side. Four times, the found a gap in the Ellon defence and managed to break through while Ellon were unable to find the same breaks and went down to the home team which went on to become eventual winners of the tournament.
